Big sweaters, cold nights, pumpkin flavored everything and football. These are some of our favorite fall/winter things. What’s one of our least favorite fall thing? Runny noses, coughs, headaches and everything that comes along with cold and flu season. Fortunately, there are a few tricks to staying healthy this year. Here are 6 tips from our chiropractors on fighting off cold and flu season:
Eat a Healthy and Well Balanced Diet
“Eat your fruits and veggies!” We know it’s not the first time you’ve heard this. But how often are you following this simple rule? Adding Vitamin C-rich foods such as oranges, grapefruit and spinach can go a long way towards staying healthy during the colder months. If you’re a big coffee drinker, try switching to green tea. Eating yogurt or natural bacterial goods can help ward off those flu attackers.
Get Enough Z’s
Set aside at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Sleep is important for your entire body! Getting the proper amount of sleep is great for your body and your mind.
Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you can sit on the couch all bundled up! (We know it sounds great, but it isn’t doing your body any good!) Exercise is a great way to boost your energy and your immune system. We recommend 30 minutes of exercise 3-4 times a week at least. If it is too cold out, join a local gym or you can do at home workouts!
Take Supplemental Vitamins
Oh the winter blues and Vitamin D! During the colder months, we are outside less and less which means we are not getting the natural vitamins from the sun, such as Vitamin D. In the same sense, you may be lacking other vitamins that help fight illness. If you are not getting the proper nutrients from food, sun or other areas make sure you get some supplement vitamins.
Wash Your Hands
“Don’t forget to wash your hands!” Another phrase you’ve probably heard before, or maybe you’ve been telling your children. Either way, it’s important to follow this rule. Viruses are persistent and can live on most surfaces for up to 48 hours! Wash your hands regularly and avoid getting infected.
Visit the Chiropractor
If your immune system isn’t functioning properly, neither will you. Fortunately, you can boost your immune system’s response by taking care of your nervous system. Your spine actually houses the nervous system which controls your immune system’s response. Chiropractic doctors like Dr. Dan and Dr. Abbie utilize chiropractic techniques to ensure that your spine and back are in alignment. Chiropractic adjustments can help reduce physiological disturbances in your nervous system. Visiting the chiropractor regularly can help your immune system function at it’s highest level!
