Healthy employees are happy employees and that equates to less turnover, more productivity and high performance rates. Before even thinking your company cannot afford additional perks give this a thought: “For every dollar that a company spends on corporate wellness programs, there is a drop of $2.73 on absenteeism related costs incurred by a company” (Harvard University). It’s time to start thinking of a wellness program as a cost reduction strategy.

Did you know that full-time workers in the U.S. who are overweight or obese and have other chronic health conditions miss an estimated 450 million additional days of work each year compared with healthy workers– resulting in an estimated cost of more than $153 billion in lost productivity annually, according to a 2011 Gallup Poll. Today, nearly 80% of people who work for organizations with 50 or more employees have access to a wellness program, according to a 2013 RAND study commissioned by the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. If you haven’t thought about adding a wellness program, you may want to reconsider.Interested in starting your own wellness program? Here are a few suggestions:

Adopt a Successful Corporate Wellness Program

  1. Find a great health insurance benefit

Of course we have to mention insurance because if your company does not offer low-cost preventative care, it is going to be nearly impossible for employees to take a wellness program seriously. Do your research on insurance companies that fit the bill!

  1. Have health conscious and nutrition optionsfruit bowl

Vending machines and cafeterias in the workplace should support your efforts for employees health and wellness. Offering free and healthy food would also boost employees latest healthy lifestyle. Programs like cholesterol and bio-metric screenings and even the flu shot can help safeguard problems. (Test it out: Set out a bowl of fresh fruit for employees to take in the break room!)

  1. Make exercise “a thing”

If your office allows for workers to leave on their lunch breaks, providing cost-free on-site health clubs or discounted fitness memberships is a great way to encourage employees to exercise during their breaks. Build a corporate goal such as walking for a few miles a week to encourage team building (while secretly getting them to exercise.)

  1. Provide functional ergonomics

Redesign your office to accommodate for employees health and well being. Toss the chair with an exercise ball, a treadmill or a standing workstation. Ergonomic telephone headsets are another great idea to allow employees to move around when talking on the phone.

  1. Test out a massage therapy program

What could be better than having a massage during a stressful day? A massage therapy program is a great way to reduce inflammation and decrease any build up stress or anxiety. (Test it out: Bring in a massage therapist for a week or two and see how many employees sign up for a free 5 minute massage.)walking

  1. Hire an onsite Chiropractor

Our course, our favorite…. chiropractic care. A chiropractic program can help prevent employee’s from injury. Chiropractors are experts in musculoskeletal injuries, which often happen on the job site. Chiropractors can also assist in guiding employees in their nutrition and/or exercise programs to help them reach optimal health. There’s nothing better than having a chiropractor onsite for employees to use!

A healthy workforce will save your organization money in the long run. Employees are more likely to stay in a company that has a vested interest in their health and well being.
