Did you know that we spend about one-third of our lives sleeping? That’s a lot of time, which means it has to be pretty important. You probably understand how important it is when you don’t get enough of it! People try all sorts of things to get a peaceful sleep – herbal tea, calming music, fans, a new mattress, etc. One thing we often overlook is our pillow.

Medical experts agree that having a pillow that helps keep the neck and back aligned is important for your spinal health. It’s time to ask yourself, is it time to toss your pillow?

We all have different bodies that sleep in different positions, so no one type of pillow will suit everyone. When looking for the “perfect pillow” be aware of your sleeping position.

Sleeping Positions

Back Sleepers
Sleeping on the back is said to be one of the best for your health as it evenly distributes pressure and weight on the spine, neck and joints. Just make sure your neck is supported and the head isn’t too high or falls back too low.

Side Sleepers
Side sleepers, while less prone to snoring, are more likely to experience nerve compression that can cause neck and back pain. Pillows should be firm enough to support the head and high enough to keep it in an even position.

Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers, we hate to say it, but this is the worst position for your health! It’s a position that makes it difficult to keep a neutral spine, putting pressure on your joints and muscles.
