Some people read, some people watch T.V. and others go on their cell phone right before they fall asleep. You probably do not think twice about scrolling through your newsfeed while in bed. But did you know that using your cell phone in bed is not necessarily healthy for you!
Reasons Why Cell Phone Usage Isn’t the Best Before Bed
- If you have neck pain, holding a cell phone may worsen your symptoms.
Strain is placed on the muscles and ligaments in your neck when you tilt your head forward to browse the internet. According to Spine-Health, 10 to 12 pounds of force is placed on your neck muscles when your head is in a neutral position. Tilting your head (roughly 60 degrees) while using your phone, puts about 60 pounds of force on your neck. If you do suffer from neck pain, using your phone in bed may worsen your pain!
- Blue light is not good for your sleep.
According to Spine-Health, the blue light from your phone inhibits your body’s natural release of melatonin. Ultimately, making it difficult to fall asleep. Lack of sleep can often make pain worse.
Bad habits are hard to break. But your best bet for a good night’s sleep is to avoid going on your phone within at least one hour before lights out. Of course, other things can contribute to a restful sleep, such as the “perfect pillow” or a healthy diet. But it’s not a bad idea to wind down without technology before bed. If you absolutely have to use your phone in bed, limit the time and try to hold your device at eye level.
